If you want to live fully, it’s rarely the big, dramatic changes that make the difference. More often, it’s the quiet, easy-to-overlook things that hold everything together. Without them, something just feels… off.
Let me take you down one of my favorite rabbit holes on Instagram.
The Magic of Hearing a Song Layer by Layer
I’ve been completely hooked on the account @creatingmusicandsound by Jon Mattox. His videos are brilliant: he takes popular songs and strips them all the way down to a single track. One guitar riff. One keyboard line. Just that, and nothing else except his commentary.
Slowly, he starts layering in the other tracks, explaining how they work together. One by one, the song starts taking shape. And then, suddenly you recognize it. That one song you’ve heard a hundred times, and it gives you chills all over again.
I love music (guitar is my thing) so this never gets old for me. What gets me every single time is how intricate songs are that I always assumed were simple. Some of those big, breezy 80s pop hits? Underneath all that fun and energy, there are layers. They are complex and carefully crafted layers that work together to create something that feels effortless to the ear.
The Most Underrated Instrument in the Room
Here’s something I have to admit, and as a guitarist, this genuinely pains me to say:
The bass guitar is everything.
I know, I know. When we think about what makes a great song, we think about the memorable guitar riff. The face-melting solo that you absolutely, definitely do NOT perform in your mirror with an air guitar. (Okay, maybe that’s just me.) We think about the vocalist, the synthesizer, the drums, the hooks.
The bass? It quietly goes about its business and rarely gets a shoutout.
But here’s the thing. Pull the bass line out of a song and something immediately feels wrong. Even with the most talented guitarist and the most powerful vocalist, the song falls flat.
It loses depth. It loses that feeling that makes you turn up the volume. The bass is the foundation. It’s the thing that gives everything else room to breathe and resonate.
And you probably don’t realize this, but most bass lines are pretty intricate. There is movement in most bass lines that quietly give your favorite songs a richness and depth that create another layer to the music.
You might not consciously notice it — but you absolutely feel it when it’s gone.
Your Goals Work the Same Way
Here’s where I’m going with all of this (you knew there was a point coming, right?).
Most of us are really clear on our professional goals. Career growth, business milestones, financial targets. These are the “guitar parts” of our lives. They’re front and center. People notice them. You talk about them at dinner parties. They feel important and measurable and visible.
But wholistic goal achievement isn’t just about the goals everyone can see.
It’s about every pillar of your life coming together — your health, your relationships, your personal development, your sense of purpose, your joy — all playing their part, all at the same time. Those are your bass lines. They don’t always get the spotlight, but they are what give your life its fullness, its depth, and its resonance.
Here’s the truth that I see again and again: someone can be absolutely crushing it professionally and still feel like something is missing. Maybe they’ve hit every career goal they set, but their relationships feel strained, their health has taken a backseat, or they’ve lost that sense of why they’re doing any of it. The melody is there, but without the bass, the song falls flat.
That’s not a fulfilling life. That’s just a very busy one.
Living fully means having all the tracks comping together to make something beautiful.
It means setting, and actually working toward, goals in every area of your life, not just the ones that show up on a resume or a quarterly report. When every pillar is in play, that’s when things start to feel like music. That’s when you get the hit song.
You Don’t Have to Figure Out the Arrangement Alone
The good news? You don’t have to sit down and figure out how all these pieces fit together on your own. That’s exactly what I love helping people do.
If you’re ready to take a real look at every area of your life and create a clear, intentional plan that helps you thrive across the board, not just professionally, I’d love to talk.
Book a free 20-minute strategy call with me to talk about your goals. We’ll take a look at where you are, where you want to go, and how to make sure every part of your life is playing its best part. Think of it as your personal song arrangement session.
Because you deserve more than a half-finished track. You deserve the whole song.
What’s the “bass line” in your life right now…the thing that quietly supports everything else? Drop it in the comments, I’d love to hear.
