The horizon has always been an intriguing concept to me. It’s as far as you can see, yet we know there is more beyond it. Brave explorers have sailed past the horizon only to find a new horizon awaiting them.
That’s why I love the idea of vision-setting for the future as a horizon.
We’ve talked a lot about setting goals and developing a goal road map. But this is a small piece of the picture. This is current-thinking, and it’s limited to the next few weeks or months.
Having a vision that extends far beyond our current goals is critical for becoming who you really want to be. Goals can help us take small steps toward your future, but more is needed.
In order for goals to be really meaningful, they have to be aligned with our bigger vision. That means we need to understand what we truly want from life. It’s the bigger “why.”
For true transformation to happen in your life you need understand what your vision is.
Vision is driven by our values. Many would-be entrepreneurs value freedom—freedom to be their own boss and work from anywhere. Their vision then is to grow their side business big enough to provide them the freedom they desire. They should align their goals to help them achieve their vision so they can experience the freedom they value.
Just like you can’t see past the horizon, there comes a point that we can’t see past in the visioning process. And that’s ok—for now. We can chart a course to that horizon, then use what we’ve learned along the way to set a new vision for the next horizon.
Sometimes there are obstacles in your way that make the horizon a lot closer. Imagine what the American pioneers thought when they reached the Rocky Mountains. After hundreds of miles of flat plains where they could see forever, the massive mountains kept them from seeing past their obstacle.
Just like those pioneers found a way to conquer the Rocky Mountains, we can overcome the challenges in our life. But it requires to focus on overcoming the obstacle first so we can see what’s on the next horizon.
If you don’t have a real vision for your future, what are your goals aligned with?
